Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, is on The Today Show right now! She's discussing the topic of good looks equaling good pay, which is pretty interesting. One woman was kept from teaching an exercise class at a gym because she was overweight. I'm glad they're talking about it. Go Today Show!

I think it's pretty cool because we're discussing the beauty industry at the meeting today. Anyway, the meeting is at seven, like always (or like the other two times we've met). Hope to see you there.

Subject:History of Feminism (sort of)
Posted by:beautifulground.
Time:10:32 pm.
This week's topic was supposed to be "The History of Feminism" but since the people who came to the meeting already knew it, we just had open discussion.

I know I said I would talk about the happenings of each meeting, but I don't really remember what all was said. We had a good time, though, so that's what matters.

Next week Sarah is doing "The Beauty Industry" so if you have any information or insights, please bring them next Monday at seven. Thanks.

Subject:Introductions

Our first meeting was a success! I define it as such because people showed up and we talked about feminist issues. The definition of success will probably be less broad in the future, but hey, you take what you can get sometimes.

Since the purpose of this community is to relate what we talked about, for people who couldn't make it or just for historical reasons, I'll try to do that now. Just an overview, you know?

We began by talking about our definition of feminism. I think we all agreed that the most basic definition would be the belief that women should be equal to men socially, economically, and politically. We also talked about the changing roles of women in American society, and the effects of those changes. The question was raised, "What are some ways that sexism manifests itself in today's society?" That's an excellent question. We need to be aware instance of sexism (whether against men or women) it would be a good idea to bring it to the table.

We spent two hours talking, almost completely in a free discussion. It was proposed that in the following meetings we have a moderator to make sure no one dominates or is left out of the conversation. I think I was chosen for next week, but I don't see a problem sharing that role. If someone is more interested in a topic, as in researching it and preparing a general discussion outline, I think it would make sense for them to facilitate that meeting. Let me know what you think!

I also think that we will have free discussion at the end of each meeting, just to share things that might not have been covered by the topic of the evening.

Don't forget to bring cash if you want drinks or food or anything. Local Color is a cool place, and since we're meeting there I think we should support it. Once Sarah goes back to school (yes, in Boston. We've discussed being something like "Sister Cities" so we keep in touch and keep up with our feminist goals and stuff. Plus we're just good friends) I'll definitely be one to volunteer, along with anyone else who's free in the evenings I guess.

Okay, that's all for now! I'm excited about this (ha, obviously) and I hope you are, too.

This is the first official entry. Everyone join! Well, if you're into this. If not, I won't hold it against you.

I would type more, but it's almost 12:30 and I have work tomorrow. More actual feminism next time!
